10 Home Remedies for Headaches

Headaches are already common to the point that most people no longer do something about it. It is pain or discomfort that you feel in your head. It can affect your day-to-day routine when the pain is already too much.

1. Drink plenty of water

There are studies that claim that dehydration can lead to a headache. It can also result in a migraine, cause irritability, and give you a hard time concentrating. This is why the best way to ease the pain you are feeling is by drinking lots of water.

According to some studies, drinking water can relieve headaches after 30 minutes to three hours. If you are not a fan of drinking water, you can try eating food that is rich in water like watermelon and strawberries.

2. Limit your alcohol intake

If you are drinking a lot of water, then you must limit drinking alcohol as well. Although alcohol does not necessarily give you headaches, there are studies that claim that it can cause migraines. Another research said there are even those who experience headaches after drinking.

These are all possible because alcohol is a vasodilator that widens blood vessels. Unfortunately, one side effect of vasodilators is headaches. Another reason alcohol can give you headaches is that it leads to dehydration. And dehydration, as mentioned earlier, can cause headaches. So this means that more water and less alcohol.

3. Magnesium

One of the important minerals that can give you a lot of nutrients is magnesium. It can improve your nerve transmission and blood sugar control. But what is more interesting is that this mineral can cure headaches as well.

A study proved that if you take magnesium, you have a lower risk of having a headache. You can take 600 mg of oral magnesium daily to treat both a migraine and headaches. Be wary, though, magnesium can have its side effects. Research shows that magnesium can give you diarrhea and other digestive problems. So be sure that you do not take too much, or you can also ask your doctor the right amount of magnesium you should take.

4. Have enough sleep

Are you also one of those people who feel their head hurts when they do not have enough sleep? Well, sleep deprivation can give you headaches as well. This can also give you other health complications.

There is even one study that has proven that those who have less than 6 hours of sleep experience headaches compared with those who get enough sleep. This is why it is very crucial that you have the needed rest every day. However, there are also cases that you have a headache when you have too much sleep. In this case, the best way to avoid headaches is by having seven to nine hours of rest every day.

5. Essential oils

Essential oils are known for having health benefits and be useful in traditional medications. These are concentrated liquids that have aromatic compounds. Even headaches can be cured by essential oils. The best oils that you can use are lavender and peppermint. Both can reduce the symptoms that you can get from headaches.

Take a small amount of your chosen oil. Then, apply it to your temples. You can do this for a couple of times until the pain is gone. You can also apply the oil to your upper lip.

6. Cold compress

But if you do not have essential oils at home, you can use ice as an alternative. A cold compress can relieve signs of a headache. This is because cold compress can decrease inflammation and constrict blood vessels.

To do this, find a waterproof bag and fill it with cold water. Cover the bag with a towel and apply it to your head, temples, or back of your neck. If you do not have the bag, you can use ice. Just make sure that you cover it with a towel before putting it on your body.

7. Drink coffee or any caffeinated drink

Another remedy that you can do is by drinking coffee. Research shows that coffee or any caffeinated drink can give you a relief from headaches. It can also improve your mood, constrict blood vessels, and give you more alertness.

There are even studies that claim that caffeine can boost the effectiveness of other medications like ibuprofen. But just like magnesium, there can be side effects when you have too much caffeine. This is why it is always best to take the needed amount of caffeine. As they say, too much of a certain thing can kill you.

8. Yoga

There is no better way than giving yourself a good relaxation. And one of the best ways you can do it is by relaxing with yoga. Yoga is an exercise which is known to improve your flexibility, relieve stress, and decrease pain. It can also relieve headaches.

9. Stay away from strong odors

A strong perfume or any kind of odor can give you irritating headaches. To support that statement, a study claims that one of the causes of headaches is strong odors. This can be common to those who are sensitive in smells. Which is why if you think you are hypersensitive when it comes to smell, then do whatever it takes to avoid strong odors.

10. Exercise

You might think that exercise is good for building muscles and so on. But did you know that it can also be a remedy for headaches? That’s right! Having some exercise or any physical activity can lower your risk of having a headache. If you are not a fan of going to the gym or doing extreme exercises, you can just brisk walk every day.
