Mental health issues are as critical as physical illness. Examples of these are anxiety and depression. Anxiety is a condition wherein you feel extreme worry or fear. Meanwhile, depression is a serious medical condition in which the way you think is affected negatively.

Anxiety

As mentioned earlier, anxiety is a feeling of extreme worry. Everyone has experienced this emotion at least once in their life. It can be when you are taking an exam or when you are meeting new people. For some, this can be considered as normal.

But when you no longer cannot control your anxious feeling, then you must be having an anxiety attack. This can then have an effect on your everyday life. In addition, anxiety can be a symptom of various other ailments such as:

  • Panic disorder
  • Phobia
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

It is also important that you know the different causes of this condition. Below are the possible causes that can lead to anxiety:

  • History of alcohol and drug misuse
  • Overactivity of your brain
  • A long-term condition like an arthritis
  • An imbalance of the chemicals in your brain
  • History of traumatic and stressful experiences

In unfortunate cases, there might be no causes at all. However, be aware that women are more prone to this condition than men.

Depression

It is a major depressive disorder that has an impact on the way you think and act. When you are depressed, you tend to feel sad and loss of interest in the things you used to love. As a result, there is a tendency that these feelings can have an effect in your daily life.

The feeling of depression can range from mild to severe. Here are the symptoms:

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Feeling sad or depressed
  • Having difficulty in making decisions or concentrating
  • Change in appetite – either you eat too much or nothing
  • Changes in sleeping patterns – either you sleep too much or nothing
  • Feeling guilty or worthless
  • No energy
  • Having troubles in doing everyday routines

You will only know that what you are feeling is already anxiety when the condition already lasted for more than two weeks. This is because the above-mentioned symptoms might be similar with other illness such as thyroid problems or brain tumor.

You should also be aware that there is a difference between sadness and depression. When you have lost a loved one or you are experiencing a terrible moment in your life, you tend to feel sad. Others might see it as grief, especially when the pain is too much to handle.

But there is a distinct difference between the two. Depression lasts longer than grief. Your self-esteem is not affected when you are grieving but is very down when you are depressed.

But apart from the feelings associated with depression, there are also other risk factors that can contribute to this mental illness. Some of these are:

  • Environmental factors
  • Personality
  • Genetics
  • Biochemistry

Curing Depression and Anxiety Through Meditation

Anxiety and depression are not just simple ailments. In fact, the World Health Organization claimed that depression is the leading ailment that can lead to mental illness around the world. There are a lot of studies that can recommend you ways to treat these conditions. But one of the effective ways was through meditation.

A study in 2017 claimed that meditation can be a great way to treat anxiety and depression. This is because meditation can lower down your stress levels, which are the main triggers of depression. By meditating, you train your mind to focus and reduce negative thoughts around your head. When you become at peace with your mind, you tend to calm down, eliminating the pressure in different areas in your brain. It can also break the connection between your me center and fear center.

But you should remember that when you meditate, you are not pushing the negative thoughts in your head. Instead, you are going to face them for you to overcome these and eventually be at peace. Below are the simple steps you can do to meditate:

  1. Sit properly with your mind blank. Make sure that your thoughts will not wonder everyone and just focus on one thing. It can be yourself or the problem that has been bothering you for days.
  1. Focus on your breath. If that is difficult to do, you can stare at a candlelit or chant a mantra.
  1. Take note of all the thoughts in your head. One way for you to really let go of everything is facing each issue one by one. When you overcome all the obstacles and problems in your mind, you can finally let go of these.

Other than removing stress in your body, meditation can give your body health benefits including:

  • Deeper relaxation
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Less stress
  • Better blood circulation
  • Improved well-being
  • Lower heart rate
  • Slower respiratory rate

You can also do yoga if you wish to. There are even those who just simply sit and close their eyes. Either way, the most important aspect of meditating is placing your mind at peace.

Depression and anxiety can be your worst nightmares. These are major mental illnesses that can ruin your social interaction, your work, and even your whole life. This is why before these illnesses can pull you down, be smart enough to find a way to cure it. One of the simple ways you can do that is by meditating.

You might think that meditating does not do much or just simply closing your eyes and breathing, but it is not. It is focusing on your thoughts and releasing your inner peace. Once you are focused, you can release all the negative thoughts and face them one by one. This way, you can reduce the stress levels in your mind to avoid depression and anxiety.
